Mineo’s South is a TINY little place on South Park Ave, not too far down the way from Leo’s. I stayed in to eat because I was shocked that they had a dining room at all. Had to check it out. Surprisingly, there were 3-4 other full tables waiting on some more substantial lunches at the time. They do a lot of Italian classics (spaghetti, lasagna, parms, etc), but Pizza seems to be their main business. 2/$5.60.
Very average looking slice. Happy to see the came fresh out of the oven. You can see some herbs on the cheese which I like, and the standard pepperoni is front and center. That crust looks a little rough and it’s fairly sizable. Tasting time.
Mineo’s dough is their most unique asset by a mile. The bottom has the texture and flavor of buttered toast. Really crispy and savory. However, once you’re through it you hit a very doughy layer that I didn’t love. Still, that bottom was like nothing I’ve ever had (said that before) (not really). I wish other places could recreate this. Probably just a matter of pulling it out of the oven at the perfect time. The crust was really hard on the exterior. Almost cut-your-mouth hard, but very fluffy inside. A little too large for my liking.
Mineo’s cheese is delicious, but nothing extraordinary. A little grease seeping out and very gooey (see upcoming photo). My only problem here is that there wasn’t enough of it. This slice has one foot in the “Buffalo Style” pool, but this really is a thin cheese layer for the dough it’s on.
The “upcoming photo”, as previously referenced.
Mineo’s sauce is pretty boring. It faded into the background of the pizza, and when I tried it on its own there still wasn’t much to say. It might seem heavier in this shot, but the sauce is actually very thin in consistency and there wasn’t a ton of it on the pizza. Any attempt to bring out some flavor, even if it failed, would have been an upgrade. I would have even taken a little sugar! Never thought I’d see the day.
The story on the pepperoni is much the same as the rest of the pie. Very average. Nothing wrong with that, but it kind of leaves me shit out of luck on things to reference. Some of you more observant viewers may have noticed I threw some red pepper on this slice. I normally don’t fuck with the slices, but these were not really doing much for me flavor-wise, so I figured it might “spice things up a bit” (slayin’ em). Let’s look at the results.
Dough🥖: (B-/B) Awesome crispy bottom is a + but the doughiness and crust is a -. It’s close to a wash

Cheese🧀: (B-) Good, but not enough of it.

Sauce🥫: (C+) Thin, not enough of it, and what was there wasn’t memorable.

Pepperoni🍖: (B) Standard fare.

Overall🍕: (B-)
Really boring, but by no means a bad slice. Sorry guys. There just isn’t much to note apart from the dough bottom…which is…well not much at all. In lieu of grasping at straws here, I really should note that service was FOR SURE noteworthy. The woman taking care of my lunch was an absolute doll, and that is worth bonus points. If I’m in the mood for another Italian dish at lunch, I will be back in the little dining room, but probably not for the pizza. Thanks, Mineo’s South!
